Bathroom Regulations

Under IEE Wiring Regulations (16th edition), bathrooms represent an increased electrical hazard. The regulations define various zones in the bathroom and demand a minimum of IPX4 in Zones 1 and 2 of the bathroom (see the typical bathroom illustration opposite).
Addvent offers a range of IP24 rated fans which meet these regulations and also offer a range of IP44 low voltage fans – recommended for added safety.

What is IP rating?

Electrical equipment may be identified as having a certain level of mechanical and moisture protection. This is called Ingress Protection and is quoted as an IP number - such as IPXY, where X and Y are numbers. X indicates the level of mechanical protection and Y the level of moisture protection. In both cases, the higher the number, the better the protection. If an item of electrical equipment is not IP rated, it must not be used in zones 0, 1 or 2 (or elsewhere in a wet/damp environment).

First Digit (X)
Protection against solids

  • 0 - No protection
  • 1 - Protected against solid objects greater than 50mm
  • 2 - Protected against solid objects greater than 12mm
  • 3 - Protected against solid objects greater than 2.5mm
  • 4 - Protected against solid objects greater than 1mm
  • 5 - Protected against dust
  • 6 - Total protection from dust

Second digit (Y)
Protection against liquids

  • 0 - No protection
  • 1 - Protection against vertical water drops
  • 2 - Protection against direct water spray up to 15° from vertical
  • 3 - Protection against direct water spray up to 60° from vertical
  • 4 - Protection against direct water spray from all directions
  • 5 - Protection against low pressure jets of water from all directions
  • 6 - Protection against jets of water of similar force to heavy seas
  • 7 - Protection against immersion between 150-1000mm
  • 8 - Protection against submersion
